Mediatised - Contemporary political issue

Purpose/Rationale

The purpose of this assignment is to develop your skills in written persuasion in a mediatised form. On the first day of the subject, we will hold a workshop devoted to writing op-ed pieces and allow time for you to begin conceptualising your topic, audience and style. The assessment piece you submit the following week is then the finished, polished version you have conceptualised in class. The assessment focuses on SILO 1 and 2 and Graduate capabilities a,d,e.

Task Details

Chose an issue (public problem) of interest to you that is topical. Research and write a convincing 1000 word newspaper opinion column about the problem, why the issue matters, and why readers should be convinced by your perspective on the problem and your recommendations. Use everyday language as though the piece will be published in a newspaper.

Instructions

1 choose a contemporary political issue that you can write about

2. Research basic facts and develop a central argument to convince the reader of your perspective of the problem

3. Write it as though it would appear in a newspaper (online/hardcopy)

4. Provide extra details including a) headline for the piece; b) your tagline and area of authority; c) hyperlinks in the piece d)targeted publication with a one paragraph justification.
